Hi, we’re the Empathy Squad.
The Right and their allies have decided empathy is bad, wrong, toxic, evil, and unAmerican… which is insane. Because empathy makes a society work. It’s how we live together without killing each other. It’s how we honor one another’s humanity. So, we on the Christian Left are taking back empathy. Empathy is what Jesus was all about and we also think empathy is the best way to protect American Democracy from, you know, fascism. (We’re anti- that.)

Every Tuesday, we discuss the news from the past week—one political story and one religious story, and we invite a guest with a unique perspective to join us.
Our guests are authors, activists, comedians, journalists, faith leaders and friends of the Christian Left. But whether you’re allergic to Christianity or not, you’re welcome here. ;-)
Meet the Co-hosts
Jeremy Alder
Jeremy has lived many lives—pastor, anti-abortion activist, community organizer in San Antonio, and most recently, comedian and social worker.
In his comedy career, he has opened for several nationally touring acts, including Demitri Martin, Russell Howard, Tom Papa, Aparna Nancherla, Nicole Byer, and Chad Daniels. He has been a featured performer at numerous comedy festivals, including Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, Big Sky Comedy Festival (Best of Fest), Asheville Comedy Festival, and Cleveland Comedy Festival (Best of Fest). He recently released his first album.
He has a MDiv from Duke (and he’s not afraid to use it), and he’s currently studying to become an LSW in North Carolina.
Liz Charlotte Grant
Liz is an award-winning nonfiction author and religion journalist based in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado, USA. Her weekly substack, the Empathy List, has twice been nominated for the Webby Awards. (And even if you don’t know Liz’s name, you may have read her viral essay about queen of purity culture, Elisabeth Elliot, and her abusive third marriage.)
